Those are different handles, for gradient stops, they are initially aligned with the bounding box of the - the pattern handles of Inkscape stock patterns always appear in the upper left corner of the page. > (I do get the handles if I switch to gradient fill, though). Also note that you have to use either the node tool or one of the shape tools to see the pattern handles of the selected object. the pattern handles of Inkscape stock patterns always appear in the upper left corner of the page.
